Tazio Nuvolari, the "Flying Mantuan," etched his name into the legend of the Targa Florio, the most wild and captivating race in the automotive world. Sicily, with its winding and unforgiving roads, became the stage for epic battles as Nuvolari defied fate at every turn. From his debut in 1928 to his triumphant back-to-back victories in 1931 and 1932, Nuvolari embodied the indomitable spirit of a driver who, despite mechanical failures and extreme conditions, always found the strength to push beyond the limits. Each of his races at the Targa Florio was not just a competition but a dance with risk, a display of courage and skill that ignited hearts and left an indelible mark on racing history.
Through this application, you can delve deeper into each race in which Tazio Nuvolari participated, exploring every detail through digital profiles, courtesy of our partnership with the Tazio Nuvolari Museum in Mantua, where the champion’s memorabilia and much more are preserved. Additionally, in the EXTRA section, you can discover the origins and view one of his cars from that era (the Alfa Romeo 8C) in Augmented Reality.
During the golden years of the Targa Florio, the racecourse was a true test of endurance, skill, and courage. Starting from Cerda, a small village nestled in the Sicilian mountains, drivers faced a legendary track filled with tight corners, steep climbs, and breathtaking descents. The dusty, uneven roads wound through wild landscapes, passing through towns like Caltavolturno, Polizzi, Collesano and Campofelice, where the warmth of the crowd blended with the scent of gasoline and burning rubber. Every meter of the course was a ruthless challenge, where there was no room for error, and glory belonged only to the bravest. In this setting, Tazio Nuvolari wrote unforgettable chapters, mastering the challenge of the Targa Florio with a skill that still echoes through the Sicilian mountains today (5 laps totaling 504 km).
